4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Slam Poetry Reading

This is an event sponsored by the Visiting Writers Series for the fall 2016 semester. It is free and open to the public. Poetry Slam Readers will include:

Cynthia French is an award-winning spoken-word artist from Minneapolis.  She received an MFA in Writing from Hamline University, is a two-time recipient of the VERVE Grant for Spoken Word, and a  past participant in Intermedia Arts emerging writer’s program. Heavily involved with the poetry slam community, Cynthia served as the Slam Master for SlamMN! for six years, has been a part of nine national poetry slam teams, and has represented Minnesota at three Individual World Poetry Slam and five Women of the World Poetry Slam Competitions. She has also competed internationally at the Swindon Festival of Literature and Ontario International Poetry Slam. Cynthia  teaches creative writing, poetry and performance in schools, universities and community centers.  In partnership with ArtiCulture, she developed a youth program called Art Slam that integrates spoken word and visual arts.  Cynthia served as the Executive Director of the Great River Arts Association, a multidisciplinary arts organization  in Little Falls, MN.  She created the cabaret-style showcase, That’s What She Said, which features female artists from a broad range of disciplines.  Two years ago, That’s What She Said, San Francisco was launched.  Cynthia would like to see the program expand to additional markets to promote women in the arts.

Devel Crisp is the current Omaha city poetry slam champion and was on poetry slam teams at two of the last three National Poetry Slams. In October, he competes in the individual World Poetry Slam Championships in Arizona.

Reagan Myers is the youngest Grand Slam champion to ever come out of Nebraska, and the first woman to hold the title in six years. She's been to two National Poetry Slams, represented the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational two years in a row, and was the Woman of the World Poetry Slam rep for 2016. You can see her work on Button Poetry. Her current job is a teaching artist with the Nebraska Writers Collective, which is the coolest job that has ever existed. In her spare time, she chases her two cats, Caspian and Persephone, around her apartment to keep them from chewing on important things.

Matt Mason has won a Pushcart Prize and two Nebraska Book Awards; was a Finalist for the position of Nebraska State Poet; and organized and run poetry programming with the U.S. Department of State in Nepal, Romania, Botswana, and Belarus. He has over 200 publications in magazines and anthologies, including Ted Kooser’s American Life in Poetry and on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’ Almanac. His most recent book, The Baby That Ate Cincinnati, was released in 2013.  Matt lives in Omaha with his wife, the poet Sarah McKinstry-Brown, and daughters Sophia and Lucia.
